George W. Carey (1845-1924) was an American author, professor, and political economist. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees. He later became a professor of political economy at the same institution.
Carey was a proponent of protectionism and advocated for government intervention in the economy to promote the welfare of workers and the middle class. He argued that free trade policies would only benefit powerful capitalists and lead to the exploitation of workers.
In addition to his academic work, Carey also wrote several books on political and economic theory, including Principles of Social Science (1877) and The Unity of Law (1872). He was a prominent figure in the American Protective Tariff League and the National Reform Association, both of which advocated for the protection of American industries through tariffs and other government policies.
Today, Carey's ideas and views on protectionism and government intervention in the economy continue to be studied and debated by scholars and policymakers.
